CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS

This position is responsible for the design, implementation and support of control system projects from their initial planning and conceptual stage through design, implementation, successful start-up, and acceptance by operating management. The design, implementation, and startup of these control systems involve the application of advanced computer/PLC/HMI programming, electrical controls knowledge, process engineering skills and a sound understanding of process safety. Knowledge of PLC hardware/software design and system integration is required together with experience of hazard studies. Previous experience of ATEX area classification and equipment selection is also required.

Direct responsibility with limited guidance to perform the following tasks:

Design and implement new control systems for capital projects

PLC programming and application development under direction of a Regional Control Engineer

HMI design and programming under direction of a Regional Control Engineer

Enhance and support existing control systems. 24x7 support may be required for critical situations.

Develop design specifications and user documentation for control system capital projects

Assist in the development of user requirement specifications/ functional specifications/ acceptance test specifications

Development of a cyber security testing program on any development system and on ‘digital twins’ of installed system

Specify equipment, obtain cost estimates, generate bill of materials and expedite purchasing and fabrication of electrical controls equipment associated with the control system

Lead contractors on project assignments with the support of the Regional Control Engineer

Support control system commissioning through site acceptance testing and then to operation

Develops control system documentation and reference material for site operations and technical support personnel

Drive continuous improvement through suggesting and evaluating enhancements to existing control software and hardware systems

Train and mentor various resources in controls/automation (interns/co-ops, external contractors, site engineers, instrument technicians)

Provide technical support for root cause analysis related to control system issues and failures

Support the development and implementation of disaster recovery program for the installed system

Works with US C&A team developing best practice within region (programming)

ADDITIONAL DIMENSIONS:

Relentless safety focus including improving process safety through process control/automation

Makes project decisions, with Project Manager's support, concerning control system aspects which affect cost, timing, and quality

Responsible for software specification, application design, and decisions impacting reliability of control system

Defines control system scope of work and deliverables with input from project team

Approves vendor supplied drawings for construction

Professionally applies technical expertise, problem solving, and decision-making skills. 

Develops own project plans and determines resource requirements.

Shows initiative in resolving issues and problems with solutions for internal/external customers. 

Fully understands and utilizes processes by which results are produced. 

Consistently produces quality work and has a real attention to detail. 

Strives for improvements in all aspects of their work

Takes responsibility for ensuring safe operating procedures

Strong communication, and organization skills

Assist with development of internal company standards on controls/automation/ cyber security

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

FORMAL EDUCATION: 

Required:

BA, BS or BEng (or country equivalent) in Engineering or related field

Preferred:

BS in Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:

Significant experience in controls engineering or related field. Ability to demonstrate roles with increasing responsibility.

Previous commissioning of Industrial Control System

A good understanding of functional safety management. Ability to understand SIL design and its verification and ongoing maintenance

Significant experience of working in areas classified as ‘Hazardous areas’ and can demonstrate the the methods of protection that can be used in the different zones of extent

Preferred:

Concurrently leads multiple significant project design and execution; significant project defined as value of $100k or greater.

Knowledge of chemical batch manufacturing processes

Knowledge of ISA S88 standard for batch control

Lean six sigma experience or belt certification

Good level of English language

TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Required:

Proven Controls Engineering skills and results

Knowledge of electrical systems including compliance with NEC and other applicable codes

Compose Functional Specifications and approve corresponding vendor bids.

AutoCAD, RsLogix 5000, RsFactoryTalk Studio Edition, MS Visio, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Project

Portfolio and project management.

Preferred:

Certified with Continuous Improvement tools; 6 Sigma, Lean, and Root Cause Analysis.

Knowledge of industry RAGAGEP for industrial automation (ISA, IEC, PIP)

Knowledge of Process Safety Management

Understanding of LOPA and SIL determination

Manufacturing environment experience.
